Purpose of this site

Provide hundreds of Ride Descriptions of Rides (between 70 and 120km ) on Greater Sydney/Illawarra's network of low traffic roads (on Sunday mornings) accessible to residents of Sydney which include 51 'King of the Mountain' Climbs.

Improve your cardiovascular performance and increase your muscle density by cycling time trials up KOM Climbs, and measure log/analyse your Climb Times on databases for each Climb against elevation graphs created from global satellite positioning systems (GPS) and atmospheric computers.

Due to the Internet, and the accuracy of GPS, KING OF THE MOUNTAIN Performance Measurement may soon enable you to compare your climbing ability over 48 KOM Climbs against Climbers in other cities which similarly -

  1. create (on this website) a portfolio of Climbs;
  2. display the Elevation Profiles of those Climbs using GPS and rate/grade the road surface friction; and
  3. encourage their battery of road cyclists to log their Climb times, to similarly identify their optimum individual Climbers and Climb Team.

If you wish to analyse your strengths and weakness to knock off those last elusive seconds, -

  1. strap on a Polar Heart Rate Monitor to 'inter alia' estimate your lactate threshold heart rate;
  2. download to your PC, your "pump's performance" up a Climb, and
  3. plot it against the altitude gradient of the Climb (graphically displayed in this website).

You may then be able to ascertain where over the Climb you might eke out more pedal from your pump.

Sydney's road cyclists can -

  1. log from their home PCs their Climb Times for the 48 Greater Sydney/Illawarra Climbs [provided climbed under Time Trial conditions set out in "Risk Warnings"], and
  2. compare their performance against all other Sydney Climbers, by relying on -
    1. empirical evidence provided by a zillion similarly logged Climb Times captured in a robust, high capacity database, with multiple reporting capability; and
    2. use elevation/profile graphs to compare -

      * all Climbs using the same 'x' and 'y' axes ratio; and
      * their performance across the differing contours/distances of these Climbs.

KING OF THE MOUNTAIN Performance Measurement -

  1. enables cyclists in Greater Sydney/Illawarra to complete individual time-trials and appraise their comparative performance by marshalling the -
    1. worldwide information delivery of the Internet; and
    2. extraordinary location plotting capacity of GPS and atmospheric computers to graphically picture and rank each Climb; and
  2. is a healthy, Sunday morning exercise initiative for -
    1. joggers with dodgy knees who'd sooner challenge their mates’ Climb Times, and other Climb Teams’ Climb Times, than be getting over a hangover;
    2. lap swimmers come cyclists who, try as they might, struggled to maintain a meaningful relationship with zillions of white tiles; and
    3. adults generally who seek challenging exercise on low traffic roads where their improvement is quantified, as a positive stress therapy to offset Mon/Fri negative work stress, but don't fancy the cut n thrust of cycle racing.
  3. is available to cyclists from rookies to pros to measure their improved Climb Ranking.

Because you determine the amount of effort expend, the elation of beating your PB, or better still beating your buddies, or moving ahead of other Climb Teams, can be hugely satisfying.

Completing a few time trials, whilst cycling with your mates, adds a new dimension to road cycling.

For yonks, cycling has offered four types:

  1. on-road touring;
  2. off-road bike trails;
  3. road racing; and
  4. mountain bike racing.

Individual time-trial KOM hill climbing now provides a 5th dimension which -

  1. clubs, bike shops, social groups and cycle suppliers are embracing to attract more adults to the joys and challenges of road cycling on low traffic roads;
  2. will further bolster the camaraderie and bonhomie from cycling with your pals 'n mates at w'ends - longer distances and bigger hills than you imagined possible; and
  3. will facilitate social intercourse at the myriad of cafe Nosh Stops - an omnipresent feature of cycling, as it ain't all hard slog.

Cycling has never been more popular due to -

  1. advances in cycling technology where bikes are Helium light and ultra responsive,
  2. health authorities encourage regular, safe exercise,
  3. an aging population striving to stay healthy;
  4. better cafes at Sydney's satellite outposts; and
  5. a stronger Aussie Dollar.

Due to the ever-burgeoning band of w'end cycling groups, cycling has never been more fun or more attainable.

To improve your PB (personal best) you need inspiration. The software in this site provides that motivation. And it is free to use.

There is no cost to use any of the 3 Registration options and log your Climb Times on this site.

Your rudimentary Registration details required to Register as an individual Climber on a Climb Team, or to register a new Climb Team, will NOT be used for any other purpose than to maintain the comparative performance reports in this site, including age bracket rankings for the Top 10 Climbers in each age division. Unless your Climb Times are in the Top 10 for your age division, this website will not reveal your age division.

This site enables cyclists to record their performance when training for an Annual King of the Mountain Individual Time Trial Challenge Series for the following 3 categories:
(i)  able bodied;
(ii)  blind or disabled as Stoker on a tandem; and
(iii) disabled riding Hand Cycles.

An annual Challenge Series could be conducted over a one day semi-final on a Sunday and two day finals on a w'end with 4 time trials in each day enabling hundreds of cyclists from 18 to 80 to compete against their contemporaries with age division winners receiving a KOM trophy awarded by State Health Dept.
